Mirra Andreeva made history by becoming the youngest player to claim a WTA 1000 title after she won the Dubai Tennis Championships at just 17 years old. The Russian defeated Clara Tauson with scores of 7-6 (7-1) and 6-1, securing her victory that will see her climb into the top 10 for the first time next week.
Andreevas journey to the final was nothing short of remarkable. She overcame Grand Slam winners Marketa Vondrousova, Iga Swiatek, and Elena Rybakina en route to reaching this prestigious event. “Id set a goal for myself to be in top 10 by the end of the year,” she said. “Now it’s February, and Ive already achieved that, so this is something incredible.”
Denmarks Clara Tauson, at 22 years old, was ahead 2-0 early on. However, Andreeva quickly settled into her game and broke back to level the match at 2-2. The first set went to a tiebreak where Andreeva won six points in a row before Tauson’s return long handed her the advantage.
In the second set, Andreeva was dominant from the start, leading by five games to one. Once again, it was Tausons unforced error that sealed the title for the young Russian player. “I’m just super happy with how I played,” Andreeva reflected afterward. She admitted she had been nervous during matches and made a few mistakes like double faults.
Despite these challenges, Andreeva managed to maintain her focus under pressure. Her victory filled her with immense joy. “This is something I dreamt of, and now my dream has come true,” she said. “I’m speechless right now.”
