Liverpool manager Arne Slot expresses dissatisfaction with striker Darwin Nunez’s performance over his past two games. In both a recent victory against Wolves and a draw at Aston Villa, the Uruguay international failed to impress, substituting late in each match.

However, Nunez was notably absent from Liverpool’s latest 2-0 win away to Manchester City on Sunday, helping the club secure an impressive 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League standings. Despite his limited minutes in recent outings, Slot has offered support for his star player.

“I helped him by saying you can miss a chance,” said Slot during Wednesday’s pre-match press conference against Newcastle. “But I couldn’t ignore that my disappointment had an impact on his work rate.” The manager clarified he was not solely critical of Nunez, acknowledging the psychological aspect following his missed opportunity in Villa.

Slot made it clear that while occasional lapses are understandable, repeated occurrences cannot be tolerated: “I can’t accept if a player doesn’t give everything. That is clear. I can accept it once but twice was too much for me to let slide.”

The manager emphasized the importance of not just scoring goals but also contributing defensively and relentlessly fighting for his team’s objectives, even after missing chances: “If you miss a chance, you need to be fighting for the team. I’m not saying he didn’t do that at all; it’s just that it wasn’t the usual Darwin we adore as fans.” Slot highlighted Nunez’s consistent work ethic in training sessions.

According to Slot’s report after Monday’s session, “Nunez was incredible” during drills, showcasing his typical commitment and energy. Currently this season, Nunez has netted six goals across 35 games in all competitions for Liverpool.

The ongoing conversation about Darwin Nunez’s performance continues as the club navigates through crucial Premier League matches with high expectations surrounding their talented striker.
