Charli XCX Wins Brits Songwriter of the Year Award

Charli XCX has been making music since 2013, but this is her first time winning the Songwriter of the Year award from the Brit Awards. This recognition highlights her potential to dominate at this year’s ceremony on March 1st.

The English singer already had five nominations for different categories in total, which reflects the global success of her latest album titled “Brat.” The songwriting prize is her first-ever win and marks a significant milestone after 12 years into her career. Previously nominated for Best Female Artist and Best Pop Act but never victorious before.

Charli XCX was critical about the Brits’ failure to nominate any female artists in the Artist of the Year category last year, alluding to what she believes is a flaw with their voting academy system.

This year, at 32 years old, CharliXCX stands as a front-runner for Best Artist and faces competition from seven-time Brit Award winner Dua Lipa, rapper Central Cee, and indie artist Sam Fender. She also has nominations in Album of the Year, Best Dance Act, Best Pop Artist (for her song “Guess” featuring Billie Eilish), and Song of the Year for “Von Dutch.” Her longtime collaborator AG Cook was named Producer of the Year by the Brits earlier this week.

2023 has been a significant year for CharliXCX, marked by her transition from being a cult pop artist to achieving commercial success while maintaining her artistic vision. Her seventh album “Brat” received top rankings on various end-of-year lists in 2024 and was praised as “pop music for the future” with lyrics that resonated deeply with audiences through their raw expression of insecurities, anxieties, and obsessions.

With its bold green artwork and a viral dance trend associated with the song “Apple,” “Brat” quickly became a cultural phenomenon nicknamed “Brat Summer.” Earlier this month at the Grammy Awards, she won Best Dance Album and Best Packaging – her first victories in that ceremony as a solo artist. Her energetic performance of singles like “Von Dutch” and “Guess” concluded with an eye-catching stage showered with underwear (which was later donated to domestic violence charity I Support Girls).

While attending the Brit Awards, CharliXCX has chosen not to perform.

The 2025 Brit Awards will be held at London’s O2 Arena on March 1st and hosted by Jack Whitehall. Performances will come from Lola Young, Sam Fender, Sabrina Carpenter, Jade Myles Smith, The Last Dinner Party, and Teddy Swims. Alongside the Producer and Songwriter of the Year awards, two more prizes have been announced: pop newcomer Myles Smith for Rising Star Award and Espresso singer Sabrina Carpenter for Global Success Award.
