Four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome suffered a broken collarbone in a crash at the UAE Tour. The 39-year-old Briton was involved in a mass pile-up early on, sustaining his injury within the opening 10km of Sunday’s final stage.

His team Israel-Premier Tech released a statement: “A CT scan confirmed a fracture to the right clavicle. Chris will be examined tomorrow [Monday] by an orthopedic surgeon to determine whether surgery is necessary for stabilizing his fracture.”

The injury raises questions about Froome’s participation in what is anticipated to be his final season as a professional cyclist. The two-time Olympic bronze medallist, who has also claimed victory in the Vuelta a Espa?a and Giro d’Italia competitions, hinted at potential retirement after this year’s Vuelta scheduled for September.
