Mikaela Shiffrin achieved an historic milestone by claiming her 100th Alpine skiing World Cup victory in Sunday’s slalom event held at the Italian resort of Sestriere. The American competitor returned to action just two months after recovering from an injury, securing first place with a time that was 0.61 seconds ahead of Croatian Zrinka Ljutic.
This remarkable achievement makes Shiffrin the first skiermale or femaleto reach triple digits in World Cup race victories. Speaking about this accomplishment, she said: “I don’t know that it’s possible to dream about a milestone like this. It’s too big, takes too long, and requires so much.
“My dreams were always simple: good turns day by day, striving to be better than I was yesterday. For me, these smaller goals are what make up the bigger picture.”
The worlds most successful alpine skier has previously spoken about her mental health struggles as she navigated returning to competition after a serious injury during a race in December 2024. While leading the second leg of a giant slalom event in Killington, USA, Shiffrin crashed near the end of the run and somersaulted into safety nets.
The incident left her with a puncture wound and muscle damage to her stomach; an injury she described as “weird, gross, and painful” during BBC’s Ski Sunday. She spent two months out injured before making a comeback at the end of January.
Shiffrins resilience was further evidenced by her remarkable record: earlier this month in Saalbach, she secured her 15th career world championships medala record equaling achievement that showcased her continued excellence on the slopes.
After winning Sunday’s event, an emotional Shiffrin reflected on the day saying, “A lot of things had to go right for me and wrong for others. In the end, I did something right.”
