Content Media Students Showcase Their Talent at Library Gig Event

Angelle Joseph/BBC Suffolk band AfterDrive, who have been featured on BBC Radio 1 and Radio X, recorded their set at Ipswich County Library. Media students from Suffolk New College (SNC) are leveraging their skills by organizing and hosting a live event titled “The Book Clurb” at Ipswich County Library on February 5th. The show will be streamed from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM GMT.

This year’s gig marks the 20th anniversary of SNCs first live event and offers students the opportunity to take on various roles, including live hosting, camera operations, publicity, production, and planning. Carrisa Hawkins, a student set to present the show, commented that it is about demonstrating more than just what libraries offer but also showcasing potential media career paths for students.

Keeley Lilley, another SNC student involved in producing the event, noted the extensive administrative work required. “There’s lots of paperwork,” she explained. “We create schedules and ensure everyones on track; it can be chaotic but really fun.” Seeing all aspects come together at the end is a source of immense pride for her.

The name ‘The Book Clurb’ was suggested by student Francesca Rose, under whose guidance this initiative unfolds. A tutor at SNC, she emphasized that “This provides an excellent platform for students to apply the skills they’ve acquired in practical scenarios.” Each participant focuses on their area of interest while collaborating with external bands and guests.

The concept behind hosting music events at libraries originated from theatre specialist Kirsty Tallent, who was Suffolk Libraries’ storyteller-in-residence last year. Now managed by Sally Garwooda former SNC studentthis project feels particularly close to her heart given her own experience as a producer in the college’s live TV event module between 2011 and 2013.

With this initiative, students are not only gaining valuable practical experience but also contributing to enriching library programming. The combination of media skills with creative community engagement reflects SNCs commitment to nurturing well-rounded professionals in the field.
