In an impressive display at the British Indoor Athletics Championships in Birmingham, George Mills clinched victory in the men’s 3,000m event by defeating James West by a mere 0.17 seconds with his time of seven minutes and 40.16 seconds.

The 25-year-old athlete was cheered on by his father, former England footballer Danny Mills, who witnessed the remarkable feat that not only secured Mills’ qualification for the European Indoor Championships but also broke the previous championship record by nearly ten seconds.

Mills expressed his satisfaction with his performance and shared his aspirations for future races. “I came here to do a jobfirstly, qualifying for the European Indoor Championships, putting my name in contention again for worlds,” he told BBC Sport. “Delighted to achieve that.”

He added, “Going into these championships from now on, I’m going to win medalsthat’s what I aim for. I really give everything to this sport and strive to be the best athlete I can possibly be.”

In the women’s 3,000m event, Hannah Nuttall triumphed over Laura Muir with a narrow victory of more than half a second after overtaking her near the finish line in a time of 8:49.49.

Both Nuttall and Muir will be representing their countries at the upcoming European Indoor Championships taking place from March 6 to 9, 2023, in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands.

Nuttall reflected on her victory. “I thought I had a chance of winning if I raced my absolute best today,” she said. “But actually executing that and succeeding is another matter entirely.”

She continued: “My strategy was to follow Muir for most of the race, gauge what energy I had left at the end, and make a move when it was right. It felt like there were still gears in me waiting to be used.

“The nerves have been off the scale over these last few days.”

Elsewhere, 17-year-old Otis Poole claimed victory in the high jump with an impressive personal best of 2.20m, despite only receiving a competition invitation on Wednesday. This leap surpassed his previous record of 2.09m.
