Controversy Erupts Over Plans to Demolish Theatre Sign
A proposal by the Torbay Council to remove an illuminated blue sign from the Bolton Cross building, which houses both the Brixham Theatre and council chambers, has sparked controversy. The council intends to replace it with a simple Town Hall sign instead.
One individual expressed their concern online, stating that removing the theatre’s distinctive signage could be akin to giving it “a death sentence.” They added: “People won’t go see shows if they don’t know where the theatre is.”
The council insists that its plan targets only the sign facing New Road, a location primarily used for town hall purposes. This approach, according to the council, strikes a balance and respects both entities.
However, all 45 comments on Torbay Council’s planning portal website opposing the change reveal strong community sentiment in favor of retaining the theatre’s signage. A social media campaign has also been initiated by supporters of Brixham Theatre.
Another commenter stated: “The theatre is just making a comeback after Covid! PLEASE don’t take this away from Brixham!”
The council acknowledged that the theatre’s trustees have the option to use their own signage on the Market Street section, which they mainly occupy. The proposal aims to honor both entities’ needs while ensuring clarity for residents and visitors.
