Deaf Choir Proudly Performs at MOBO Awards

Eight deaf students from the Percy Hedley Foundations Northern Counties School had an unforgettable experience when they attended the prestigious MOBO Awards in Newcastle. The school, which specializes in educating children with disabilities aged three to 19 years old, has a unique choir that signed their rendition of “God Gave Me Feet For Dancing” by Ezra Collective for inclusion in the awards ceremonys music video.

The students participation and performance were met with pride and praise. Liam, one of the attendees, expressed his deep appreciation for being part of such an event: I will remember this moment for the rest of my life. Similarly, Kameron emphasized feeling included during what he described as a remarkable experience.

This years MOBO Awards, founded in 1996 to celebrate black culture and music across the UK and beyond, saw several historical wins. Arya Starr made history by becoming both the first African woman and the first female artist recognized as Best African Music Act since 2007. Central Cee achieved another milestone by winning the Best Male Act award for a third consecutive time.

Northern Counties School, part of the Percy Hedley Foundation, organized its students involvement in creating the music video that was played at the ceremony held on Tuesday in Newcastle. The schools choir leader, Mandy Davison, praised her pupils’ participation: Their performance highlighted the importance of inclusivity and proved to all present that their talent deserves a spotlight regardless of differences.

Sophie, who attended the awards alongside other Northern Counties students, echoed feelings of inclusion during her experience. Liam added that being part of such an atmosphere was thrilling for him personally.

The schools involvement demonstrated how music can serve as a platform not just for talent but also inclusivity, providing opportunities for those who might otherwise be marginalized.
