Discovering Hidden Stories: Unveiling the Tales of Disability Through Content Libraries
According to Amy Holmes/BBC, Katie de Joux from the Buckinghamshire Council explained that the project will utilize both physical and interactive books, alongside installations, writing workshops, and dramatic performances crafted by adults with disabilities. These creations are set to tour Buckinghamshire libraries this spring under a program titled The Other Library.
Produced by the Freewheelers Theatre and Media Company, the exhibition comprises 17 individual projects and three group projects, each showcased in either physical or digital book formats. This initiative is part of a broader Rekindle project spanning over three years, which is supported by the National Lottery across five local authorities.
As per Katie de Joux, who serves as the culture and outreach services manager at Buckinghamshire Council, “The mission of The Other Library is to share hidden stories related to disability within our county through physical and interactive books.” She added that visitors can expect a diverse range of experiences, noting, “You never quite know what you’re going to get with the performances.”
Residents in High Wycombe, Chesham, Aylesbury, and Buckingham will have access to this exhibition until April 23. Each library participating features an installation resembling a bookshelf that showcases various projects along with creative workshops conducted by author and screenwriter Sara Clifford. These events are complemented by two performances from disabled artists during the weekends.
Katie de Joux further elaborated on what visitors can expect, saying, “Some of the performances will be storytelling sessions; there will also be dancing. It’s a mix where stories might come to life through dance, music, or poetry. You never quite know exactly what you’re going to get from each location and it always promises an engaging half-hour.” Robert Finley and David Ruffhead from Freewheelers Theatre and Media Company are set to perform at various libraries in Buckinghamshire.
There is a possibility that the tour could be expanded across the country in future years. Clive Harriss, the Conservative cabinet member for culture and leisure on behalf of Buckinghamshire Council, commented positively about The Other Library, stating: “This exhibition goes beyond traditional paper text; it’s a multimedia experience where some stories are conveyed through dance, music or poetry.” He encouraged residents to visit one of these events at their convenience.
