Novak Djokovic has confirmed that his partnership with Andy Murray as a coach will continue indefinitely. The three-time major winner began working alongside Djokovic on a trial basis during the January Australian Open, where Djokovic reached the semi-finals but had to retire due to a hamstring injury.
Following his exit in Melbourne, Djokovic stated that he and Murray needed some time apart before discussing their future collaboration. However, ahead of his first-round defeat by Matteo Berrettini at the Qatar Open, Djokovic announced that Murray would return to his coaching team.
“I expressed my desire to continue working with him,” said Djokovic, 37, in an interview with ATP Tour’s in-house media channel. “It’s indefinite as far as how long we will work together, but we have agreed to focus on the [United States] and some clay-court tournaments initially.”
Murray retired from professional tennis last August but took a surprising coaching role with Djokovic shortly after.
“Being in different roles together on the same side of the net was exciting for both of us,” Djokovic added. “Andy has unique insights into my game since he has played against me and all the top players currently active.”
The Serbian star is aiming to secure his 25th major title, a feat that would surpass Margaret Court’s record in terms of career Grand Slam victories.
Meanwhile, Berrettini defeated Djokovic in their Qatar Open first-round match. The defeat was World No.7 Djokovics first since retiring from the Australian Open semi-final against Alexander Zverev earlier this month.
“I didnt have any pain issues,” said Djokovic after his loss. “Berrettini just outplayed me today.”
Berrettini, 28, dominated both sets in a convincing win. The Italian’s victory over the three-time major winner is only his fifth success against Djokovic since losing to him at Wimbledon in 2021.
“I’ve always looked forward to playing against him,” said Berrettini, who won ATP Comeback Player of the Year honors last year for securing three titles following a long injury absence. “It’s something I wanted to achieve.”
Berrettini will face Tallon Griekspoor in the second round of the Qatar Open.
