Efforts Prove Fruitful: The Achievements of Bonmati

Aitana Bonmati triumphed as the Golden Ball recipient for being the top player at this year’s Women’s World Cup. The reigning Ballon d’Or winner reflects on Spain’s efforts during the Luis Rubiales incident, emphasizing that their fight has not been in vain.

Former Spanish football federation boss Luis Rubiales was recently found guilty of sexual assault after kissing Jenni Hermoso without her consent during a post-World Cup medal ceremony. In court testimonies, players rallied for Hermoso’s sake; this led to the dismissal of World Cup-winning manager Jorge Vilda from his role due to involvement in the case.

Before Spain’s Women’s Nations League match against England at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday, Bonmati expressed hope that sharing their experiences could lead to societal changes. “I believe that our case will spark change in our country and within football,” she stated. “It’s also a global issue.”

Bonmati highlighted that while the incident occurred outside of football, it has impacted all women working in various professions. She emphasized how their courage during this ordeal makes them stronger and more deserving respect as female athletes.

Regarding Rubiales’ acquittal for coercion allegations, Bonmati commented on the trial’s purpose rather than its sentencing. “I was surprised there wasn’t a sentence for coercion but I’m glad the trial has served its purpose,” she said. “We are all happy.”

The current Spain manager, Montse Tome, expressed that her focus remains on football while respecting the players’ personal matters. She stated: “My intention is to ensure we discuss football when training and during international duty.” However, she acknowledged their support for Hermoso.

England’s head coach Sarina Wiegman commended Spain’s bravery in discussing such sensitive issues despite maintaining peak performance on the pitch. She added that they must continue addressing these matters globally with solidarity to foster change. Lucy Bronze, England’s defender, echoed this sentiment while emphasizing their unwavering support for Spanish players.

Alessia Russo from Arsenal also praised her teammates’ class in dealing with adversity and continued performing at a high level despite the challenges.
