Empowering Thousands: A Massive Solar Farm Lighting Up Lives

Otterpool Park LLP, a project by the Folkestone and Hythe District Council, aims to construct a substantial solar farm on agricultural land in Court-at-Street, located near Lympne. This ambitious initiative intends to harness solar energy for nearly half of Kents population residing within the town limits.

The proposed facility will power approximately 8,500 new homes scheduled for development around the former Folkestone Racecourse area and Sellindge, following successful planning approval in 2023. Council leader Jim Martin emphasized that this project represents a significant step towards achieving net-zero emissions. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the council’s ultimate objective is to develop 10,000 residences.

At a recent cabinet meeting, it was disclosed that over the next three decades, this solar farm will generate an impressive 21 million for the local community. Jim Martin highlighted one of the projects advantages: its integration with housing development. He explained, “It doesnt make sense to install panels in fields if there are no homes connected to them.”

Renewables firm SNRG is anticipated to manage this expansive solar farm. The site will be developed in phases, starting with Phase One covering an area of about 47 acres and Phase Two encompassing roughly 49 acres. Future expansions onto neighboring lands could further increase the capacity of the facility.

This initiative underscores the council’s commitment to sustainable development, aiming not only to provide renewable energy but also to generate significant financial benefits for the community while preserving green spaces wherever possible.
