Travis Kelce Continues Chiefs Dynasty Despite Super Bowl Exit, Says Retirement Looms
Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach expects tight end Travis Kelce to stay with the team for another season, despite the recent loss in Super Bowl 59. The star player, who is dating pop icon Taylor Swift, was considering retirement after his performance dropped off compared to previous years.
Following the Super Bowl defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 40-22, Kelce mentioned he was thinking about hanging up his cleats. However, Veach expressed no urgency in making this decision during their pre-offseason conversation.
“He has one more year under contract,” Veach said. “We left it at ‘he’d be back’ and we’re excited to have him back. As far as I’m concerned, there is no deadline.”
Travis Kelce’s influence on the Chiefs in recent years cannot be overstated. The team has made five out of six Super Bowls appearances under his leadership over the past six seasons. Unfortunately for Kansas City fans, he managed only four receptions for 39 yards during this year’s tournament.
“We did have a chance to talk before they left,” Andy Reid, head coach of the Chiefs, said in an interview. “His future is up to Travis. At this point, it’s ‘get out of town.’ They’ve played a lot of football here, so step back and then we’ll talk.”
Kelce was one of the top receivers for several seasons from 2016 through 2022. He achieved more than 1,000 receiving yards in seven consecutive years during that period. His production dropped off slightly last year when he accumulated only 823 receiving yards and made 97 receptions.
On his New Heights podcast, Kelce spoke about the physical toll that Super Bowl runs have taken on his body over the past six seasons and expressed reluctance to rush into any major career decisions.
