Published 9 hours ago, the incident involving Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri and Preston forward Milutin Osmajic has prompted significant discussions within the football community. The altercation occurred during a recent goalless draw between Burnley and Preston, where Mejbri became visibly agitated in response to something allegedly said by Osmajic.

Burnley’s manager, Scott Parker, provided an update on his players well-being, stating that Hannibal is currently “in a good place.” He expressed concern for the young player, emphasizing that they have been keeping close watch and offering support. In addition to this, Burnley acknowledged the alleged incident and has pledged full support to Mejbri.

Meanwhile, Preston’s manager Paul Heckingbottom confirmed that Montenegro international Osmajic was “upset” following the allegation but did not provide further details on any official response or investigation by his club. The Football Association is currently handling the incident and has advised Burnley about their support.

The FA has taken allegations of racist abuse seriously in recent years, with increasing penalties for perpetrators. For instance, Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur received a seven-match domestic ban following an incident involving racial slurs directed at teammate Son Heung-min. Additionally, Osmajic faced an eight-game ban from the FA and a 15,000 fine for biting Blackburn’s Owen Beck.

With Preston hosting Burnley in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday, March 1st, there are questions about whether both players will feature in the match. Parker indicated that he has not considered excluding Mejbri but noted that further discussions with Hannibal would be necessary closer to the game date. Similarly, “there may be some dialogue” between Burnley and Preston regarding the incident.

As investigations continue into this high-profile case involving racism within football, clubs are increasingly focused on maintaining a supportive environment for their players while ensuring accountability through rigorous regulations set by governing bodies like the FA.
