Lionel Messi, at the age of 37 and an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, has been fined by the MLS for violating the league’s policy regarding unsportsmanlike conduct. The incident occurred during a match on February 22 against New York City FC, where the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Messi was seen approaching an opponent’s coaching staff member and placing his hand on their neck at the end of the game. This action led to him being disciplined by the MLS Disciplinary Committee, who fined him for violating their policy against raising one’s hands towards an opponent’s face, head, or neck.

Additionally, teammate Luis Suarez was also penalized under the same MLS rule after he pinched Birk Risa of New York City FC on his neck during halftime. Both Messi and Suarez have been fined without the amount being disclosed to the public.

This incident highlights ongoing efforts within professional sports leagues to maintain a high standard of player conduct and professionalism, emphasizing that even world-class athletes must adhere to league regulations.
