Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim acknowledges the team’s responsibility for the club’s current financial struggles. Speaking shortly after confirming additional redundancies affecting up to 200 staff members, Amorim emphasizes that as “the engine” of Manchester United, his squad must improve.
The Red Devils have lost over £300 million in the past five years and find themselves ranked 15th in the Premier League. Ahead of their upcoming match against relegation-threatened Ipswich at Old Trafford on Wednesday, this marks their worst league campaign since the tumultuous 1989-90 season when Sir Alex Ferguson narrowly avoided being sacked as United flirted with relegation before finishing 13th.
“We need to address all issues within the club,” Amorim stated. “One crucial aspect is understanding how we got here, and a significant part of that is our lack of success on the pitch because Manchester United relies heavily on its football team.”
Under Erik ten Hag’s leadership in his first season, Manchester United achieved a respectable third-place finish; however, within two seasons, they have fallen to their current position. While Amorim and his players may not be directly affected by cost-cutting measures such as the abolition of free lunches at Old Trafford (estimated to save £1 million), some colleagues will soon face unemployment.
“This year has been incredibly tough for everyone,” said Amorim, who took over from Ten Hag in November. “With significant changes being made within the club, if our football team were performing well and winning matches, it would be easier for fans and staff to feel positive about the situation. However, we are currently experiencing a challenging period both inside the organization and on the pitch. We must fight against this feeling.
“We have to do our part and strive to improve performance.”
Regarding striker Rasmus Hojlund’s underwhelming form—a mere two league goals from 15 appearances—Amorim believes that the issue lies more with the team as a whole than with him personally. “It is clear,” Amorim added, “that we are not providing enough opportunities for Rasmus.
“We need to improve our play style so he gets more chances. I think Rasmus has a lot of potential; seven goals in all competitions this season show that he does indeed have the ability and skill.” Hojlund joined United from Atalanta for £72 million in August 2023.
“Sometimes, when young players are given significant roles like being the primary striker, it can be difficult. Rasmus has pace, technique, and even scores goals that others find challenging to replicate,” Amorim explained. “However, at times he doesn’t make optimal runs or feels overly anxious to touch the ball after passing long periods without possession.
“We address these issues in training. He already demonstrates his ability here; it’s more a matter of team play than individual performance.”
