New Mural Celebrates Rik Mayall’s Hometown Connection

A mural celebrating comedy legend Rik Mayall has been unveiled in his hometown, Droitwich Spa. The artwork, created by artist Milan Topalović and displayed on an empty shop unit on High Street, pays homage to the local icon’s legacy.

Topalović’s piece depicts Mayall as “the king of comedy,” featuring five iconic outfits from his beloved characters. The mural also includes nods to Droitwich Spa, such as a reference to its famous radio mast and an image of Adrian Edmondson and Rik Mayall sitting on their signature bench from the show “Bottom.”

The artwork has generated excitement in the town, drawing crowds who appreciate the vibrant design. Local resident said it was “full of fun” and that they loved seeing something new for Droitwich Spa.

Next month, tickets will go on sale for the inaugural Rik Mayall Comedy Festival, a community-run event from 31 May to 7 June in Norbury Theatre. The lineup includes Greg Davies, Peter Richardson, Shaparak Khorsandi, and Helen Lederer as headliners.

Rik Mayall was one of the UK’s most beloved performers when he passed away in 2014 at age 56. He left an indelible mark on British comedy through his work with The Young Ones, Blackadder, and Bottom, among others. Topalović expressed pride in capturing Mayall’s spirit along with local references in his mural.
