New Roof Shields Cherished Theatre from the Elements
The Plowright Theatre in Scunthorpe, built in 1958, is set for a major renovation. Officials expect the roof replacement project to conclude by March.
North Lincolnshire Council owns the theatre and announced that it can no longer afford patchwork repairs due to safety concerns. The existing roof has reached the end of its lifespan and poses a risk of leaks that could damage the auditorium, performance equipment, and other interior areas. This prompted the council to seek funds from the government’s Shared Prosperity Fund for a £160, 000 project.
The venue is named in honor of late actress Dame Joan Plowright and serves as an essential part of Scunthorpe’s entertainment scene. Councillor John Davison, who holds the position of cabinet member for culture, heritage, and arts, praised this investment. He stated that it will help protect the much-loved venue and ensure its continued role in hosting vibrant live performances within North Lincolnshire.
