Rick Buckler, Former Drummer of The Jam, Passes Away at Age 69
Rick Buckler, former drummer in The Jam, passed away at the age of 69 according to reports by ex-bandmates on social media.
The punk and new wave era band rose to fame in the late 1970s and is credited with inspiring a revival in mod fashion and music. Led by singer Paul Weller and guitarist, he shared that “I’m shocked and saddened” by Buckler’s death on X platform. The bass player Bruce Foxton echoed his sentiments saying he was “devastated.”
In a statement made by the family of Rick, they described him as a loving husband, father and grandfather who was devoted to many people around him. They added that he peacefully passed away after being ill for a short duration with family members surrounding him in Woking.
The Jam had 18 consecutive UK top 40 singles from their debut hit in 1977 until the band’s break-up in December 1982. The group scored four number one hits, including Going Underground and A Town Called Malice.
Buckler and Foxton later collaborated on a new project named From the Jam while Weller pursued his music career with Style Council and as a solo artist after The Jam disbanded. Buckler had to cancel an upcoming spoken word tour in UK due to health issues before he passed away.
“I’m shocked and saddened by Rick’s passing,” shared Paul Weller on X platform. He went on explaining how they rehearsed from his bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking until their time at various pubs and clubs as kids and eventually recording a track together. “What an incredible journey!”
Bruce Foxton also weighed in with his thoughts: “I was shocked and devastated to hear this very sad news today,” he said. He continued that Rick had been a good guy who added innovative patterns of drums, helping the band’s songs stand out from others.
The cause of Buckler’s death is yet to be officially confirmed by authorities. Music fans have mourned his passing as The Jam continues its legacy and impact on mod fashion and music in general.
