Screen Returns: First Film Shown at Reopened Cinema After Closure

Weymouth Pavilion Steps In After Cineworld Closure

A town’s theatre is gearing up to fill the void left by the recent closure of a nearby Cineworld on Bond Street. The Weymouth Pavilion will showcase its first film, “Dirty Dancing,” on Friday, February 21st, utilizing an impressive newly-installed 11m (36ft) screen in their auditorium.

The theatre has reported strong ticket sales with a capacity reaching just under 400 seats. The town’s sole cinema, Cineworld on New Bond Street, had to close its doors on December 30th as part of the company’s national restructuring efforts.

Phil Say, the director of Weymouth Pavilion, has shared that trial screenings at their venue have been successful so far. He highlighted the challenges involved in installing such a large projector and emphasized they are now equipped with an enhanced surround sound system for an optimal viewing experience. “We’re ready to go on Friday night,” he expressed.

Mr. Say noted that ticket sales started immediately after the announcement of their first screening, which was met with significant interest from the community: “We’re up over 100 tickets just a short time into pre-sales.” He also mentioned that capacity would be slightly less than 400 to ensure all attendees have an excellent view.

Previously, Weymouth Pavilion stated that the closure of their town’s long-standing cinema had left a “void” in the community and they were eager to bring back the cinema experience many felt was missing. With Cineworld closing its venue at Tower Retail Park in Poole, residents now have no closer alternative than Cineworld Yeovil, which is 30 miles (48km) away.
