Top 10 Memorable Moments from Stars Celebrating 50 Years of Saturday Night Live
On Sunday, a star-studded cast took part in a three-hour special to celebrate the 50th anniversary of legendary US comedy show Saturday Night Live. The SNL50 event was live from Studio 8H at New York City’s Rockefeller Centre. Renowned for its sketches and celebrity hosts, SNL premiered in October 1975 and played a crucial role in launching the careers of comedic legends like Eddie Murphy and Bill Murray.
Several original cast members returned to mark the milestone alongside younger acts. One highlight was Sabrina Carpenter’s performance with Paul Simon during Homeward Bound, a song that also featured George Harrison when he appeared on SNL in 1976. Nirvana reunited for another time, this one featuring surprise guest Post Malone introduced by actor Adam Sandler.
Nirvana played Smells Like Teen Spirit with Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic following their recent performance to raise money for the LA fires relief fund. The special also paid homage to legal drama between Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively, where Ryan Reynolds took part in a Q&A alongside Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
Aubrey Plaza made her first public appearance since the death of Jeff Baena, her husband. She introduced Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard for a performance of Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares 2 U, wearing a tie-dye shirt in tribute to him. Meanwhile, an almost unrecognisable Meryl Streep debuted on SNL with Pedro Pascal.
Garrett Morris, the first black person on set and an original cast member from the very first season of Saturday Night Live, returned for a nostalgic appearance. Jimmy Fallon’s character Domingo also made his comeback in this special, along with his brothers Theo Wargo/NBC via Getty Images
Kim Kardashian reappeared to perform her version of Maharelle Sisters alongside Ana Gasteyer and Kristen Wiig. Adam Sandler sang about the shows history during a sketch introduced by Jack Nicholson, listing previous cast members including Chris Farley and Norm MacDonald.
