US Government Attempts to Rehire Nuclear Personnel It Recently Terminated
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a component of the Department of Energy, is attempting to rehire employees it recently fired due to concerns that their dismissal could compromise national security.
Initially, hundreds of energy department workers received termination letters. However, CNN reported that more than 300 NNSA staff members were laid off. The spokesperson from the Department of Energy disputed this claim and stated that “less than 50 people” were dismissed from NNSA.
The layoffs occurred on Thursday and included personnel stationed at facilities where weapons are built. Subsequently, media outlets reported efforts by the Trump administration to reverse these terminations but noted difficulties in reaching fired employees due to their locked-out federal email accounts.
A memo sent to NNSA employees on Friday instructed that termination letters for probationary workers were being rescinded and advised staff to work with supervisors to contact them through personal emails. The memo also mentioned sending the information once it is received.
The recent wave of layoffs follows another round where nearly 10,000 federal workers across multiple agencies lost their jobs last week. In addition, approximately 75,000 workers have accepted voluntary buyout offers from the White House for autumn departures.
President Donald Trump aims to cut spending at all levelsboth domestically and internationallyand has even suggested eliminating the Department of Education. His efforts are supported by Elon Musk through an initiative called “Department of Government Efficiency,” which involves sending workers to analyze data in federal agencies and facilitate the buyout offers.
Last week, President Trump directed agencies to terminate nearly all probationary employeesthose who had been on their positions for less than a year without job protection. This decision could potentially affect hundreds of thousands of individuals.
Several legal challenges have arisen against the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce government size and spending since he was inaugurated on January 20th, with over 60 lawsuits filed in that period.
