Yorkshire Cultural Landmarks Secure 30M Investment Grant

The “critical” investment includes 15 million for the National Railway Museum in York, 10 million for the British Library North in Leeds, and 5 million for the National Poetry Centre, also located in Leeds. This money is part of the government’s Plan for Change program, which seeks to foster economic growth nationwide.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy expressed her commitment: “Everyone should have access to arts and culture in their hometown.” The regeneration project will not only enhance cultural offerings but also generate new employment opportunities, according to the government.
The National Railway Museum’s funding will be allocated for a new building that includes amenities such as a fresh entrance, additional galleries, shops, cafes, flexible event spaces, and improved visitor facilities. This project is part of a larger plan in York to repurpose underutilized railway land into an innovative city quarter. The vision is to accommodate over 3000 new homes and create more than 6000 jobs.
The 10 million allocated for the British Library North will be used to redevelop Temple Works, a derelict Grade I building. Meanwhile, the 5 million for the National Poetry Centre will fund renovations of a redundant Grade II listed structure to serve as a national headquarters for poetry.
Nandy further elaborated: “This support empowers our cultural organizations to continue playing an essential role in skill development, talent nurturing, and high-quality career creation across every corner of the UK.”
A total of 47 million is being distributed among six major culture projects nationwide. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner highlighted that by investing in these “critical” cultural initiatives, local leaders and communities can fully realize their potential.
“This investment will lead to increased tourism, economic growth, and more income for residents,” concluded Rayner.
